In Praise of Teachers!

I just need to give some much-deserved praise to all the teachers out there!

I spent yesterday on a field trip with my son's third grade class (all three classrooms!). Because we live in Massachusetts, this is a wonderful time of year to take the kids to see the Mayflower and Plymouth Plantation. But it's still almost an hour on the bus and then a day-long outing.

Let me just say that nothing will make you appreciate what teachers do all day with our kids more than spending a day with them! I honestly don't know how they do it! I do volunteer at school a lot and even help with a reading group in his class every week, but it's always for a shorter period of time, not all day. Having a classroom of 25 students with differing needs and personalities--I just can't imagine.

Now, I know there are some teachers out there who really aren't doing an outstanding job--but I like to think they're the exception and not the rule. I know this year my boys both have teachers who really care about what they're doing and care so much about the kids.

I know we have some members here who have been teachers and I just want to tell them how much I appreciate what you've done and how amazing you must be to do a job like that every day!

I'm sure you're right about most teachers having good intentions. I agree and I do admire teachers for their dedication and the amount of work they do.

I also think, as in any field, there are a few who just belong doing something else! There's a substitute at my sons' school who's been around FOREVER! I guess she used to be a full time teacher and now just does subbing. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've seen kids reduced to tears when they know she's going to be their teacher for the day. She has absolutely no patience for anything and spends most of the day yelling at the kids. That's the extreme example, but I just don't understand why someone who doesn't seem to even like children would continue teaching!

But, as I said, luckily that's the exception!

Thanks so much, Cheryl! Teachers really don't hear that enough.

I would dare to say that even those who are not outstanding work very hard and have good intentions.

Its appreciative parents like you that make the job more rewarding than it already is
