Hi Everyone!

I'm Debra from Gainesville, Florida. I have a 10 month old baby boy and an amazing husband. I am originally from Puerto Rico but I have lived in Gainesville for over 15 years.

Before I had my son, I worked as a Kindergarten teacher. Now, I am a stay at home mom. I stay active through subbing, watching kids (occasionally), and doing freelance work. My family is part of the Rock of Gainesville (www.therockonline.org), where we are actively involved in the arts.

My hobbies are reading, singing (or anything music related), shopping, photography, and looking at my baby Smiley.

I am excited about being part of this chat. Although I have a wonderful group of friends, it's always refreshing to talk to others. I know that the people on this chat can relate to the things that I am going through as a mom: the unsolicited advice, the criticism (from others and self), the fears, the dreams, the physical changes, the emotional surprises, and so on.

Most recently I have begun to plan my son's first birthday party. Keeping it simple has tunred out to be much harder than I thought. I want to do something simple yet memorable. Any ideas?

Birthday parties do always seem to get out of hand, don't they? Try to keep them simple, but it always seems to sort of spiral from there.

I do have one idea for a cute keepsake, though. Go to a local craft store (Michael's, AC Moore, etc.) and pick up a plain picture mat, one to fit a 5x7 or 8x10 is probably best. As each guest comes in have them sign it with a Sharpie. If there are other kids, they could even draw a little picture. People can either just sign names or write a little "happy birthday" note. After the party, use the mat to frame a picture of your son at his party. Makes a really cute keepsake to hang in his room or a playroom.

But most important----enjoy every minute!!

Hey Debra.

I read your post quite a while ago but I couldn't think of anything to suggest doing for your little ones first birthday. But this morning I woke up and had a slight idea. I think that something you could do that would be simple yet extremely memorable is make your own cake. Let your son help you decorate the cake and definitely take lots and lots of pictures. You will have no idea how much fun he will have decorating his own birthday cake!

That is just a main idea.. but I really think it would make his birthday amazing. And you will surely enjoy it so much; seeing his smiles and his creativity.
